Quick answer
A gondola ride in Venice is priced per boat, not per person: the City of Venice sets the fare at €90 for 30 minutes between 9:00 and 19:00, and €110 for 35 minutes after 19:00, and your group shares it. If you are one or two people, a seat on a shared gondola booked online (from $41 per person on the most-booked Grand Canal ride) costs less; if you are four or five, a private boat at the official fare usually works out cheaper per head. The €2 traghetto, a gondola ferry across the Grand Canal, is the shortest gondola ride of all.

Nine bookable rides cover almost every reason to take a gondola. A shared gondola ride sells single seats on a boat that leaves at a set time, which is the cheapest way for one or two people. A private gondola ride gives your group the whole boat. The others add something specific: a serenade, the Bridge of Sighs, the evening light, a photographer, or a Doge's Palace visit on the same day.

What makes the gondola different
Three things to know before you board
The gondola is a working boat with its own rules, built and rowed the same way for centuries.
One oar, one rower
A gondola is up to 11 metres long and asymmetrical along its length, so a single gondolier rowing on one side drives it straight.
280 hand-made pieces
Each boat is built from 280 pieces of eight kinds of wood and takes about two months to make.
A fare set by the city
The fare is fixed by the City of Venice and posted per boat, so the same ride costs the same at every station.

How much is a gondola ride in Venice?
The City of Venice, not the gondoliers, sets the fare: €90 for a 30-minute ride from 9:00 to 19:00 and €110 for a 35-minute ride after 19:00, per gondola, in force since 1 November 2023. The fare had been €80 and €100 since 2006. Because it is per boat, the cost per person falls the more of you there are. Booked online, a seat on a shared gondola starts at $41 per person, and private rides with extras such as a serenade or prosecco cost more than the station fare because the extra is part of the price.
Shared or private: which gondola ride to book?
Book a shared ride if you are travelling alone or as a couple and want the lowest price; you sit with other travellers and the boat leaves at a fixed time. Hire a private gondola if you are three or more, want to choose the route, or are marking an occasion: at a station you pay the official fare to the gondolier, and online you pay more for a fixed time slot and free cancellation.
How this site works
This is an independent guide, not the gondoliers' association or the city. It earns a commission when you book a ride through its links, at no extra cost to you. Fares paid on the ground are given in euros, as you will pay them; online prices come from real listings, in US dollars, rounded to the dollar, and can change at checkout.
